Wow, crispy creme bacon cheeseburgers.  Disgusting, yet strangely intriguing.

Gardening

Jun. 16th, 2008 | 10:18 pm

I have a little 4x4 raised garden at the bottom of the outside stairs.  That's about as close as you can get to the kitchen, since it's upstairs.  It's my 'salad' garden, with cherry tomatoes, parsley, green onions.  I planted cherry tomatoes because the matriarch said how she would love that indoor garden thingy she sees on tv that grows herbs and cherry tomatoes cause she loves cherry tomatoes.  So I've been picking tons of them, but she don't eat them.  In fact only myself and Ola eat anything from the garden.  The others, think there's some disease or cat piss on them.  And this was before the salmonella outbreak, now they have things on the news to back up their odd view of gardening. ;)

Since I grew up with my mom growing something, even a if it was a little herb garden, I'm used to going out in the yard and picking things, but these people I live have never done that, so to actually grow something yourself and not buy it from a store is a like a foreign concept to them.

A New Earth

Jun. 12th, 2008 | 09:26 pm

There sure are some small minded & scared people in the world!
I read the book and watched the webcasts for "A New Earth" with Oprah and Eckhart Tolle and don't recall them renouncing Jesus Christ, it's only that their interpreting what Jesus said and it doesn't conform with what's being taught in the church.

From a very young age I've always felt that there was more to Jesus Christ and his sayings then what is taught.  That he was misinterpreted by men trying to control other men and of course women.

As Eckhart kept bringing up sayings from the bible I kept getting the feeling that, that's what I've always felt Jesus really meant.

"We need to understand here that heaven is not a location but refers to the inner realm of consciousness.  This is the esoteric meaning of the word, and this is also its meaning in the teachings of Jesus."

Manly Books

May. 28th, 2008 | 09:23 pm

Hmmm.  The majority I've heard about, but never actually read.  I wouldn't mind reading some of them, but then other's I've seen the movie or know so much about it'll be boring to read.  I wonder what a women's list of must-read books would look like?

Memorial Day

May. 26th, 2008 | 11:55 pm

In his bestselling The Last Lecture, Randy Pausch deals briefly with the question: What do you say to someone who is dying and knows it? Pausch says that he heard from thousands of people after he was diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer and gave a lecture about it:

“I heard from a man in his early 40s with serious heart problems. He wrote to tell me about Krishnamurti, a spiritual leader in India who died in 1986. Krishnamurti was once asked what is the most appropriate thing to say to a friend who was about to die. He answered: ‘Tell your friend that in his death, a part of you dies and goes with him. Wherever he does, you also go. He will not be alone.’ In his email to me, this man was reassuring: ‘I know you are not alone.’”

Light Pollution

May. 23rd, 2008 | 06:16 pm

I read this article about light and dark and how even low levels of light in the room like a nightlite can screw with people's biological clocks.

So...
I have the cable modem in my room and it's little blinking lights always shine against the opposite wall.  I put a dark handkerchief over it which made my room instantly darker, but it made me notice the green light  on the plug that goes to my laptop.
So I turn off the power strip to that and that makes me notice the power strip behind my bookshelf where I plug in my phone.  I unplug that and by then my room is really dark except it makes me notice the clock radio with it's green digital display.  Nothing another handkerchief can't fix.
Finally, I'm almost at pitch blackness if it wasn't for the ambiant light filtering through the bamboo blinds.

I found these interesting articles about light and sleep.

Light Pollution Raises Risks of Breast Cancer

Feature articles on melatonin at NaturalNews

The biological effects of prolonged light exposure

From that page.....

Sleep duration as a risk factor for the development of type 2 diabetes.
Men reporting short sleep duration (< or =5 and 6 h of sleep per night) were twice as likely to develop diabetes, and men reporting long sleep duration (>8 h of sleep per night [sleeping past dawn, into the light, one presumes - RJ]) were more than three times as likely to develop diabetes over the period of follow-up. Elevated risks remained essentially unchanged after adjustment for age, hypertension, smoking status, self-rated health status, education, and waist circumference…

- Diabetes Care. 2006 Mar;29(3):657-61. [15504560]

...women sleeping 5 hours or less gained 1.14 kg... more than did those sleeping 7 hours over 16 years, and women sleeping 6 hours gained 0.71 kg... more.

- [Lack of sleep in women may cause obesity] [16914506]

As astonishing as it may seem to those of us raised with ever-more artificial light from TV, video games, computers, cell phones, bedside LEDs, etc.; there is a rapidly accumulating body of evidence which suggests that extended exposure to artificial light (and therefore too little true darkness) is the largest reason why these illnesses are striking so many in industrialized and industrializing nations – this is the Photoperiod Effect.

It's not that artificial light is bad in itself, of course, but that our bodies need the true night that existed during the whole period during which we evolved. That is, we need long periods of darkness each day in order to stay truly healthy. This is because our hormone system largely controls our bodies, and night (deep darkness) controls that hormone system.

Therefore, quite new science is pointing us toward a natural path to much better health, similar to the natural food movement that brings us a bit closer to the sorts of foods our remote ancestors ate.

I exercised for the first time in months...ok for over a year.  It went alright.  I'm tired, I ache, and wonder why I stopped in the first place.  Oh, yeah, I'm lazy.  :)
